Tackling spam

I guess I have left this blog unkempt for too long a time. Spam first crept in, and then swiftly swamped the posts. I have not updated my blog engine in some time and that clearly spells doom these days. The most shocking thing for me was watching spam in ACTION. As I was clearing out the spam comments, new comments started popping in magically. I had to disable the comments, and had to ban some of the spamming IPs to stop the avalanche. I probably have to get to updating Textpattern sooner rather than later, but this should stop the flooding temporarily.

When there is nowhere to turn to

You get desperate. Like the comments on this blog post.

I just don’t understand. Were these people just acting dumb or have they have been driven to this pitiable state of delusion by the poor, if not nearly non existent customer support meted out to BSNL subscribers?

Maybe BSNL should consider employing bloggers to boost their service.

This is not BSNL support. Please contact them.

Desperation.

Who said pop-ups were gone?

What we have now seems to be even more annoying – Flash-ups. And they get on my nerves. Take a look at this screencap. This is taken from the website of a leading telecom provider in Singapore.

The area circled is usually the region that a typical user would “hover around” before settling on the links to click on them. Now, the issue here is that when you mouse over the area right above the link (past the while line), you end up with a flash pop-up that covers half your screen. And the close button for it is located in the bottom right hand corner, almost perfectly camouflaged aginst the orange background.

This kind of strangling flash pop-ups are somewhat tolerable for a website whose business model thrives solely on online advertising. After all, no advertising probably means no website. However such a practice on a commercial website is highly questionable.

You deserve better!

Yeah right, I do.

CATCHA

The title of this post is an intentional misspelling of CAPTCHA.

Over the years, spammers have grown smarter and smarter, just as our technology struggles to keep up with the bots.

But, take a look at this particular CATCHA used in Rapidshare:

CATCHA

After trying a few times, I gave up. Now, you probably have to develop a habit of counting cats if you want to download anything from rapidshare.
