Start of the end
One day or perhaps, night in 2007, it will all be over. The final installment of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the insert-your title-here will be out. Each turn of the page would lead closer to the answers. Closer to oblivion.
And then, it will all be over. Of course, there will be more re-reads, debates and wrestles with fait accompli. But, the excitement, suspense and thrill would all be gone.
There have been many books recently that have been claimed to be the next Harry Potter. A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket was one of them.
A couple of months ago, I bought the first two books of that series. And I should say that I have never read any book as depressing as those.
Atleast the books warn their readers. In the cover jacket, atleast there is a warning that says “In this book nothing ever nice happens to these children”. Oh well. The story starts off cheerfully with the parents of three cute children getting burnt to death in their house, and the unpleasantness steadily increases from there on.
I struggled with the first book. And I gave up half way through the second. They are currently sleeping in my cupboard. And the worst thing about the books is that they gave you hope and then quickly extinguished them. Every slight happy moment in the book is followed by some severe heart wrenching ones. It’s funny yes, but definitely serious depressing.
So after that I have looked at various other books, but nothing ever can beat HP. Nothing else can ever come close.
